The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Technical Council invites you to join us for the second free webinar of the year- this one on sharps/needle policies that work on Thursday, October 8th from 10:00 to 11:30am Pacific Standard Time. This past May, the Technical Council’s spring webinar was on the topic of refillable one pound gas cylinders, often used while camping or tailgating. These cylinders are problematic as a single-use HHW item that cannot be disposed of in the trash. Webinar speakers included: Christine Flowers from California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) who spoke about the Refuel your Fun campaign that promotes refillable gas cylinders in some areas of California, Karen Gissibl from the City of Sunnyvale who shared problems with single-use gas cylinders at Sunnyvale’s Material Recovery Facility, and Josh Simpson from Kamps Propane/Pick Up Propane who provided an overview of providing the public with refillable propane tanks. Christine and Karen spoke about the Refuel your Fun campaign which promotes the use of refillable gas cylinders commonly used for camping and tailgating. The webinar attracted over 70 attendees from the private and public sectors all over the country as well as Canadians. This has since sparked a larger national dialogue as it was clear this issue is ubiquitous. CPSC has since established a gas cylinder listserv to share information. The webinar’s agenda and presentations slides are accessible from the www.hhwtc.org homepage.
The Technical Council hosted a topic lunch at the 2015 CRRA Annual Conference featuring speaker Mark Kurschner, President of Product Care Association/ReGeneration. Mark is involved with a variety of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs in Canada including paper, appliances, pharmaceuticals, and more. Mark inspired the audience with examples of EPR successes in Canada showing us here in the States that there’s much work to be done. You can access the handout that Mark distributed during his Topic Lunch presentation.
